Denby's Mayflower design, created by Gill Pemberton in 1964, is an iconic pattern that has stood the test of time. This charming pattern features an upright spray of three flowers in yellow, brown, orange, and grey, which gives it a distinctive "homespun" quality that is immediately recognizable as one of Pemberton's designs.
Mayflower was the first of several similar stylized floral patterns, including Sherwood, Canterbury, and Chatsworth, which were designed by Glynn Colledge on Pemberton's Mayflower forms. The plates and bowls of each pattern are hand-painted with stylized floral decoration and finished with Denby's stunning glaze.
Although other companies have tried to replicate Denby's designs from this era, none can match the design integrity and artistry of Denby's hand-painted originals. Each form for these patterns has a dark brown ribbed coffee pot, and an unusual projecting side handle, which is a further evolution of the side handle used by Pemberton in some pieces of her Chevron series.
Denby's Mayflower design remains a beloved classic that is highly sought after by collectors and lovers of fine pottery. Its intricate floral details and homely charm make it a must-have addition to any collection.
